Jesus told the woman at the well that if she drank the water He had she would never thirst again. He was not talking about the thirst of the natural senses but of the spiritual. We are all born parched and dry on the inside and try as we might to quench that thirst all we can do is briefly fill the well. Then all too quickly the harsh winds of life blow and leave us thirsting again.
It is our nature to provide something physical to try and imitate something spiritual. When Adam sinned and lost the covering Presence of God he quickly gathered something physical, fig leaves to cover him. Later the life of an animal would be sacrificed to provide covering, a type and shadow of Jesus' sacrifice. Jesus said that when you believe in Him you will have rivers of living water flow from your innermost being. It is a well of refreshing when the world has tired you, a source of power when your strength has been exhausted.
It is a place where your spirit runs to when others have left you, a feeling of comfort in a chaotic world. Paul said we are cleansed by the washing of the water by the Word. In Genesis the Holy Spirit moved upon the waters of the deep and brought forth life and so it is today as He moves deep within us and causes life to flow. This is a sovereign work of God to stir the well of our soul. And as the eyes are the window to the soul some may see the light sparkle from within that well and ask why? That's when we simply tell them, "It's something in the water."
